There is no direct train from Bangkok to Chiang Rai. You may take the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, then take a bus the rest of the way to Chiang Rai. You would take the Northern line via Ayuthaya-Lopburi-Phitsanulok-Lamphun-Chiang Mai. There are several ways to travel by train in Thailand. 1st Class Sleeper, 2nd Class Sleeper, 2nd class seat, etc depending on budget and comfort. You may book your ticket at the station at least 1 hour before departure. Recommended to book early if traveling on or around weekends. There are 2 main bus stations in Chiang Mai and – Arcade is the main station you will need to go on to Chiang Rai by bus. They are fairly close to one another, so a quick tuk-tuk for 20 THB should get you there.
